Starting school is an exciting time for young children and their parents. It can be a daunting time, too.  With preparation and encouragement, we provide the child with the opportunity to become school ready.   • Encourage independence/confidence in

-Changing clothes

-Putting on shoes/coat

-Toileting

-Hand washing

-Meal times/eating

  • Encourage sharing/turn taking
  • Encourage communication (no interrupting) with adults and children
  • Encourage sitting and listening, understanding and attention (story time)
  • Practise writing their own name and letter sounds (starting with their own name)
  • Practise naming shapes and colour recognition
  • Choosing games
  • Discussions about school/role play/read books about starting school
  • Go to the school so the children see the outside, see the playground at play times so they can see and hear the children having fun
  • Do practise school runs
  • Have old uniform from the school so children can dress up.
